Haibike XDURO Nduro 5.0 Mens Electric Mountain Bike
For those who love to not only like to fly downhill but fly up, this FLYON powered Haibike XDURO Nduro 5.0 does both like a boss. With lightweight yet tough components for fast, hard descents yet lightweight enough to make it back up to the next gate even in a short window, this e-Enduro monster will take everything in its stride.
SDURO vs XDURO
In recent years Haibike have decided to make it easy for the rider to choose between its lines of electric bikes. The XDURO series is for people who take riding seriously and won’t want to be left out in the rankings. Meanwhile the SDURO series is for those who may still be fit as a fiddle but are more weekend mud warriors than people who eat, sleep and breathe riding.
Haibike NDURO
Haibike’s enduro riding MTB series of electric bikes is designed to put a grin on your face during the climbs between stages and absolutely scream down the hills and mountainsides on those stretches. For those considering getting into the emerging electric enduro competition scene, Haibike have delivered a serious player.
Who are you?
You’re serious about Enduro riding and are perhaps competitive in the emerging e-Enduro competition circuit, yet may have seen shortcomings in the Bosch or Yamaha power and control systems. With Haibike’s in-house FLYON system the XDURO Nduro 5.0 will show you another way beyond the limitations of the main European OEM power systems.
Nduro 5.0 details
With the i630Wh battery integrated into the lower tube of the carbon frame, weight distribution has been optimised on this very competitive e-Enduro racer. At the front it has 180mm travel RockShox Yari RC shocks and these are matched with a RockShox Super Deluxe RC3 rear damper.
An 11-speed Sram NX drivetrain that runs over a 11-42t Sram PG1130 rear cassette is combined with the Haibike proprietary FLYON 38t front cog to deliver some great ratios for uphill and downhill legs. Your leg power is supported with the FLYON 250W motor that has a whopping 120Nm of torque to power up those ascents, even from a standing start. Stopping comes from Magura MT5 hydraulic brakes on 203mm rotors.
On 27.5” wheels Maxxis Minion DHF and DHR II tyres will grip loose and wet substrates as well as handling roads comfortably. It comes with 780mm handlebars for fine control and a telescoping seat post for climbs and descents.
Flyon
New for 2020 is the Haibike Flyon drive and control system. Perhaps aware that they could do better than those companies they pay licenses to to use their power systems (Bosch and Yamaha) the German cycling brand has redesigned the e-bike system from the ground up.
European regulations limit how fast you can go but not how fast you get to that top speed. Even the 250W Yamaha PW-X manages 80Nm of torque – which really is kicking like a mule – but Haibike have gone a full 50% of power better and delivered 120Nm of torque which is like being kicked by a mad bull. You want warp speed acceleration up the track or even at the lights, you got it!
It isn’t just the motor Haibike have fixed up. The speed sensor has been improved with a special disc spinning in front of a sensor that is integrated into the frame. This sends 18 measurements per wheel rotation to the control system, enabling it to respond more quickly than any other sensor system to a change in cadence.
The 38 or 42 tooth proprietary front chain ring that takes that power from the motor and sends it direct to the drivetrain.
The Flyon control system is integrated into the handlebars just above the stem. Here, Haibike’s boffins have been hard at work too. You have a choice of five power settings from Eco to Xtreme. Colour codes tell you what power level you’re in and with easy navigation you can see a whole range of measurements from projected battery life-distance to speed and distance, as well as things like heart rate and cadence.
One of the problems all e-bikes have is that they are carrying the weight of the Lithium-ion battery and the motor. These are unavoidable, so the best manufacturers have worked out the best place to put them for ride-ability – this is in the frame, low down where the pivot point should be. This is why the Flyon battery is completely concealed in the frame.
A final improvement on the Bosch / Yamaha systems? The battery. The best Bosch offers is the ‘i500Wh’ battery that may give you 50 miles of mixed riding. For very little weight penalty Habike offer a 630Wh battery that on a carbon framed featherweight machine should give you an extra 20 miles before you reach into your backpack for a spare!
