Haibike SDURO HardNine 4.0 2019 Electric Bike
This 29er electric mountain bike is built around blasting across the countryside in mind. 29 inch wheels are about rolling over the lumps and lumps at speed – if you love to get around on longer distances the Haibike SDURO HardNine 4.0 is definitely the ride for you!
HardSeven vs HardNine
What size wheel do you prefer? The 27.5” wheel can handle tricky trails better while the 29” wheel is more of a cross country purist. Simply, the HardNine is the 29er and the HardSeven is the 27.5 wheeled electric mountain bike.
4.0, 5.0, 8.0…
Haibike categorise their bikes with the more expensive and better kitted out bikes at the higher numbers and less expensively equipped bikes at the lower end. Don’t expect a clunking jalopy for the lower price – Haibike are the Porsches of the electric bike world!
SDURO vs XDURO
In recent years Haibike have decided to make it easy for the rider to choose between its lines of electric bikes. The XDURO series is for people who take riding seriously and won’t want to be left out in the rankings. Meanwhile the SDURO series is for those who may still be fit as a fiddle but are more weekend mud warriors than people who eat, sleep and breathe riding.
Who’s the HardNine 4.0 for
This machine is for those who love to explore the world. You may want to see the backwoods of your county and enjoy the best it has to offer without staying on the roads and dodging cars as you go.
OK, so give me some detail!
The 11-speed, Shimano Deore M6000 drivetrain runs over an 11-42t cassette, allowing you to tackle big climbs without demanding too much from the battery as you go. This is controlled with a rapid-fire thumb-click control on the handlebar.
While the 29 inch wheels will roll over much of the rough stuff, the 100mm travel SR Suntour XCR Air LO-R front shocks with air lockout means that you can have more shock absorption on the rougher stuff / downhill and at the flick of a switch move onto a harder setting for roads and climbs.
Tektro M275 hydraulic brakes on 180 mm rotors are ample for blasting around the countryside and can really control your speed in all conditions.
The wheels? Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres are good for road and for the mucky stuff.
All this comes on a frame specially built around the 29er wheels that is light and of a great geometry for longer rides in comfort. At just over 21kg (including electronics) this is a relatively light and agile machine for great riding out in the wilds.
The Haibike SDURO HardNine 4.0 comes with a 500 watt hour battery that should give you a good 50 miles in the saddle on a longer day’s riding.
500 watt hour battery, Bosch Performance CX and Purion display.
Your 500 watt-hour battery will give you a good 50 miles of mixed terrain riding – a lot more if you put more into the pedals and ask less of the motor! Batteries are easily swapped out using a special key so for a big day in the saddle you might want to carry another.
The 250W Bosch ePerformance CX is built with the trails in mind. It gives a little extra power at lower cadences for when you need that extra kick to get up to speed, while cutting out briefly during a gear change to protect the chain as you need to kick a little harder on those climbs. With a peak output of 75Nm of torque (up to 300% the wattage you put into the pedals) you can really shift when you need to, too!
This is controlled through the Bosch Purion control system. This gives a range of data to you the rider, from estimated battery on a given power setting to distance left on that setting, as well as speed and distance covered. It really is all you need for a fun day out in the hills! With power just a click of the left thumb and the other data available with an easy to use thumb-joystick you can focus on riding not faffing about with the system!
